Better Edge offers high performance carbide drills, end mills and specials.
Better Edge was founded by Bill Shaffer in 1998. Over time, he developed expert processes and modified machine designs to optimize productivity and specification compliance accuracy. Simply sharpening an edge wasn't good enough. Bill, full owner and President of Better Edge, has expanded the company's services to four main divisions: reconditioning, manufacturing, coating services, and distribution of Kennametal tooling, Simonds Saw Blades, and Arno products.
Better Edge Reconditioning Services has vast capabilities for many tool styles, including end mills, trepanning and porting cutters, counterbores and custom designed tools. In addition, Better Edge capabilities also serve new, complex geometries and edge prep requirements of high-performance cutters.
Better Edge Manufacturing is a new division of services provided by the Better Edge team. Due to the enhanced productivity results, an increasing number of customers have asked them to serve their special tooling needs and manufacture tools for them from “scratch.” Better Edge has separated their production activities and initiated this new division.
Conveniently located in Southwestern Pennsylvania, Better Edge is easily and quickly accessible to the industrial heart of the Northeast Region. With state-of-the-art, specially designed CNC 5-Axis grinders, highly sophisticated inspection equipment and in-house coating capabilities, end users throughout the region have long been benefiting from Better Edge's superior work, getting better performance, longer tool life and more regrinds per tool.
Today, Better Edge serves end users throughout the United States from Automotive & Transportation, Aerospace & Defense, Heavy Equipment, Tool Manufacturing, Medical and Energy industries.
There is a big difference between regrinding and reconditioning. "Regrinding" is just sharpening a cutting edge. "Reconditioning" is repairing the geometry as close as possible to it's original specifications. Effective reconditioning takes know-how, experience and even the original manufacturer's training & certification. They have and do what it takes - everyday!
Better Edge offers in-house Oerlikon Balzers Coatings
Most regrinding houses use independent toll coaters, who use generic recipes for particular coatings, regardless of the type of tool or part that is in their chamber. At Better Edge, their coatings are optimized for drills and end mills. Controlled processes and capabilities for both standard and proprietary coatings provide better performance, increased flexibility and faster deliveries from having their own in-house PVD coating center.
